Separations by phase addition or creation: Distillation, absorption and stripping, liquid-liquid extraction. Approximate, equilibrium-based methods for multistage separations. Rate-based models for distillation. Enhanced distillation and supercritical extraction. Separations by barriers and solid agents: Membrane separations, adsorption, ion exchange. Separations involving a solid phase: Leaching and washing, crystallization, desublimation and evaporation, drying of solids. filtration, cyclone separation, scrubbing, and settling.

Characteristics of fossil energy sources. Petroleum, coal, natural gas. Products from crude oil: Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and light naphtha; light, middle and heavy distillates; oils, waxes and coke. Components of petroleum processing in refineries: Natural gas and liquid separation, cryogenic processing of natural gas, basic processes of liquid petroleum processing such as crude oil distillation, catalytic cracking, isomerization, de-waxing, and petroleum coking. Dean coal technologies: Gasification, synthesis gas, synthetic natural gas, coal-to-liquids for transportation fuels, alcohols and chemicals production. Integrated gasification combined cycles for electrical power generation. Technologies related to carbon dioxide capture for sequestration and enhanced oil recovery.

Catalytic processes and catalysts used in petroleum refining and processing: Alkylation, catalytic cracking, reforming, isomerization, hydrodesulphurization and hydrodentirogenation. Catalytic steam reforming of hydrocarbons to synthesis gas. Catalytic gas-to-liquid conversions to produce liquid hydrocarbon fuels and alcohols. Three-way cata1ysts for the removal of carbon and nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases. Fuel cell systems, thermodynamics, kinetics, cata1ysis.

Gasification and liquefaction of biomass to synthesis gas and pyrolysis oil for efficient energy generation and catalyic conversion to valuable chemicals.

Side products in energy production and their minimization: Gaseous and particulate matter emissions. Local problems generated by side products, side products cycles and their elimination rate in nature, source-sink equilibrium. Zero discharge concept. Sustainable energy production: processes, technological, economical and social factors, and related problems.
