This course will opt for covering an important interface between politics and philosophy by presenting both the traditional approaches and the new challenges. The traditional approach basically addresses the history of ideas and its search for continuity in 'unit ideas'. The new challenges come from various directions including pheonemology and post-structuralism. This course will first of all include an exercise in reading of basic texts on certain themes such as political obligation by Plato, Locke, Hobbes, Mill, Rousseau and Rawls. It will then prompt the students to think about the themes and the concepts introduced in terms of their culturally specific and universal dimensions. |
